Last Night’s speech

DA BOYZ:

“The whole experience at the Claremont, both before, during and after Frank’s speech, was really fun and amazing. The residents bantering before Frank went on, and folks coming up to talk to Frank were unforgettable, and we just had huge smiles on our faces the whole time, if not outright laughing at the kinds of things that were being said, especially between Margaret and Anne. What a ham!

It was an altered reality … it is really hard to describe how Frank giving a speech there at the Claremont to a mix of residents, Koala, Sean, etc., Lasagna and a group of young guys in the front row while young black women attendants peeked in, obviously loving it … how it all seemed to twist reality into a new shape on some real level … and it was brought out more explicitly later in Frank’s conversation with Sydney and the giddy enjoyment of Margaret … and Lasagna’s huge smile as he left, and the volunteer Lauren’s reaction …. Frank was a master the way he brought everything into a context, and related everything … There were a number of residents that didn’t quite get it, but you could really feel why Frank said this was his best “performance” … On the way home, we were saying that it would be neat to see Frank deliver the same speech to a very different audience … Corey said he bet it would be the same if it were a group of young people. There was nothing special about these being “old” people. There would be a certain percentage who just didn’t get Frank … the screen … but another that could feel what Frank was doing on a very deep level. It felt like Frank’s conversation with Sydney about “wasted votes” changed reality just for its having happened. She was really neat. “

Frank:

OK…the residents are in their 70s-90s. Erika said Margaret is usually a “mover” who never stays in one place for more than 5 minutes without walking away. So her staying for 90 minutes, engaged and turned on, was a big deal. Sydney has been carrying my platform around with her for weeks. The black women gave me the “power to the people” fist at one point in the speech. Our son koala’s friends seemed inspired.

But Lasagna was the real story. He is a rich, powerful guy who owns half of our neighborhood, with whom we have fought heated battles over property, etc. for years…I have chewed a few new assholes on him. Ultimately we won…but in a way that he got something better than he was going for. So now he’s jamming in my band and is coming to my speeches and gets transformed! I’ll do the same thing with Iran, etc.!

Here are the kinds of reactions from everyday people to the campaign

DA BOYZ:

At BNG, it was the usual Wednesday routine … Corey was telling folks about how Frank was going to be interviewed by the Independent and about his new running mate, Dr. Suzy Block! In general, it just made people happy, and amazed people. It was a kind of rush of feeling that anything is possible. And now people like Rosalina were asking before Corey even had a chance to say anything … what was new with the campaign??

Corey continued to hand people fliers for the speech. A woman who works at KALX as a music critic, and who is often in the store, a friend of Lob’s, was there shopping, and Corey gave her the flier. She loved the graphic, and was going to check out the website to read Frank’s platform. Another guy, Tod, who often chats with Corey when he is in to shop, a 9-11 Truth guy, got one too. The image just made him laugh … he had heard Corey talk about Frank, but never seen him … Corey encouraged him to check out the platform, because he and Frank share a lot of the same ideas. He would. He told Corey about a Guns & Butter show that he really liked, and said that we would probably want to play the music from it on LUVeR. It was a guy who does songs in the voices of Bush, Cheney, etc., strikingly exact … with a version of This Land is Your Land, and a version of Imagine that are funny and very topical as to what is going on now, like social/political commentary.

Back here for lunch, we checked in, and Corey got the lock manufacturer number for Alexi. Corey set up another calzone dough in the bread machine, had lunch, and emailed a bunch of TV stations about the speech. Lasagna was working that day, so on his way back to work he handed everyone a flier for the speech! Lasagna was impressed … he said, “He just might do it, Linda!” And was talking about how the motorcade would come down

Curtis St.
, all the limos, etc! Corey said, but we’d have to paint them like the LUVeRmobile and CRV!

The afternoon was stocking the order … Sydney, the ex-buyer from ECNG was in the store to see Phan, and Corey gave her a flier too. She loved the image!

Back here, Corey caught a few snippets of the tail end of the interview while putting the chickens away, and then got the whole rundown from you guys. Just mindblowing! Back here, Alexi was home. He said he had a very successful day, and he wasn’t even talking about the job, which was successful too … but things he couldn’t tell Corey about! Corey told him about the interview!! Totally amazing and inspiring. Frank was a master.

We decided to make the calzone tomato sauce that night because we really wouldn’t have a chance until Saturday itself, and we definitely wanted it made ahead of time because it got better with age. Alexi set up chickens to cook while Corey went to the store. At BNG, Dana came into shop, and Corey reminded her of the speech. She wanted to come, but didn’t know if she would be able to … her mission was to paint her daughter Angelina’s room while she was away with relatives, and would have to see how it was going, but wanted Corey to call her and remind her on Thursday. Corey was telling people about the Independent interview, and they were amazed. Keo said that was it, he was voting for Frank. Could Frank then bring Ch. 28 to Richmond (he wanted to see Dr. Suzy!). Suzanne said Frank was very wise when she heard what he had said about “winning”. Dana just loved the way Frank talked with the reporter.

Dear Frank,
I’m a journalist for a British newspaper called the Independent. I’m writing a story on the presidential candidates for 2008, and was hoping you were free for a brief talk on the phone as part of that.

If it’s something you’d be interested in, I’m contactable on this email address.

Many Thanks,
Ravi Somaiya

Hi Frank & Ravi,

Your email came in just as I was brushing up on your planks, Frank. I must say this is a genius platform of peace and prosperity that is really quite practical. This makes me even more excited about being your running mate. It also makes me realize: America is at war with everything. Most American politicians are in the war business. We are not in the war business. We’re in the people business. The only way we can stop the wars is to take the reins of power (nicely, with a kiss) from the war profiteers.

And with a platform like yours, we can’t lose! We will win by inserting new ideas for new generations. And I know just how I’m going to refurbish Number One Observatory Circle.

I’d be happy to talk to Ravi. The Independent is the home of one of my favorite writers about the war, Robert Fisk.

Frank on social justice

Dearest Frank,
I watched you on http://expertvoter.org/. It was so cool to see you and Linda. I am looking forward to meet her someday.

I got all emotional seeing you in those videos, being happy and excited about the possibilities you were advancing for our country. I agree with much of what you have to say. I don’t agree with automatically granting $1K a month to everyone. The most famous poet in Québec, Félix Leclerc, wrote, “If you want to kill a man, give him money.” Of course, there will always be exception to this — like taking care of people who truly need assistance, whether permanently or for short periods of time until they are capable of taking care of themselves and/or their families (thinking of single parents and those who assist people with special needs).

What I am advocating instead is a much healthier minimum wage, so that it is always worth the effort for people to devote their time to another’s company or to work for society. When you think of it, who do you want to be without for an entire month: the CEOs of the country or the garbage collectors? Yet the CEOs get millions for their jobs and the garbage collectors barely make a living. I definitely favor a Maximum Income — which your 75% tax after $1M is a great tool to limit the greater abuses in the existing distribution of wealth (that’s an oxymoron for sure). (A society that doesn’t suffer from wants on all levels will support the arts and the artists that I’m sure you are considering with your policy.)

I was very touched when you said, “You have always imagined this kind of world. We just need leaders who share our dreams.” That is a true insight into humanity. I, I’m sure one among the multitudes, always imagine a world with justice; oftentimes, I’m resigned that I will never know it. You, on the other hand, obviously refuse to be resigned about this. You will go out fighting for justice and equality. I must say that I admire and love you greatly for it. You inspire me to continue with the tool I am using toward the same end result.

Namaste,
Karóle

This warms me, Karole…warms us here! My stock in trade has always been hope. Hope fuels change. Most politicians trade in fear. I enjoy life. That opens up possibilities.

I’ll address your concerns about the guaranteed minimum income in my next speech. But i think the belief that having that kind of safety net somehow cripples people is one of those myths which creates smoke that is meant to confuse. We don’t hear it about inheritance, tax breaks, corporate bailouts, etc….only money for poor people. I would suggest it isn’t the money, but the demeaning process, the treating of the people as second class citizens, etc. That cripples. I’ve been on S.S.I. Off and on since I was 17. The little money (I don’t know how people who don’t live tribally survive on it!) Is not the problem. For example, I can’t work because I would lose not only the S.S.I. money, but my attendant and medi-cal. Today I caught my eye doctor limiting when I can make a time to see him because I’m on medi-cal…and lying about it! I can handle these kinds of things. But most people are not in a position to do so, so they eat it. But if everybody get the guaranteed minimum income, we would get rid of the demeaning process.

Such safety nets tend to keep all wages high…which is why they have ripped the safety net apart…which is why that myth!

Frank Moore
